Town of Přerov

Přerov is a town in the Olomouc Region, 21 km southeast of Olomouc in Hornomoravský Valley on the Bečva River, about 200 m above sea level and has an area of 58.48 km². It has approximately 44,000 inhabitants. It has been a statutory town since 1 July 2006. Until 2002, it was the seat of the district office of the Přerov District. The city is an important traffic junction. It is home to many major industrial enterprises. Přerov was also a military city, where the 23rd Air Force Base of Edvard Beneš was located. In the future, Přerov could be the crossroads of the Danube- Oder-Elbe Canal and one of its main ports (a study on this project is being considered). Part of the historical core of the town (Upper Town) has been an urban conservation area since 1992. The former hinterland is referred to as the Lower Town.
